Abstract: This article re-examines the typological distinction between stress-timed and syllable-timed languages from an interdisciplinary perspective. A theoretical and empirical analysis is developed to determine whether the study of the setting into music of specific languages – in this case, Spanish and English – can shed light on the examination of the speech and verse prosody of those languages. The varying rules of text-setting for Spanish and English are seen to reflect the prosodic characteristics of the corresponding languages. Read more
